The sales tax deferral will apply to 24,000 small and mid-sized bars and restaurants, specifically those that paid less than $75,000 in sales taxes last year. These qualifying establishments will still have to file returns for March, April and May, but will be allowed to withhold payment without interest or penalty, providing they make the payments in four chunks spread from May 20 to August 20. These qualifying establishments will still have to file returns on time, however the payments due March 20th, April 20th and May 20th can be deferred without interest or penalty, providing they make the payments in four chunks spread from May 20 to August 20.

What must qualified taxpayers do to request relief?

For most qualified taxpayers, IDOR will automatically waive penalties and interest. If you receive a notice from IDOR that imposes penalties and interest that you believe should have qualified for a waiver, you can respond to the notice to indicate that you believe you should have qualified for relief. IDOR will review the response and grant relief, if appropriate. Additional information, including payment schedules provided by Illinois Department of Revenue.
