Understanding what the numbers say about the health of your nonprofit is critical to being able to manage the organization successfully. This in-person course develops your ability to appropriately interpret and understand the major financial statements that are used by nonprofit organizations. The course demonstrates the power and limitations of accounting information in assessing financial performance and decision-making. You also learn the uses of financial statement analysis or ratio analysis for nonprofit organizations.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the basics of a nonprofit financial statement’s structure.
  2. Read and interpret the Statement of Financial Position (balance sheet), Statement of Activities (income statement), Statement of Functional Expense, and Statement of Cash Flows.
  3. Have the ability to interpret and understand the financial statement footnotes.
  4. Learn about the ratios that are key in determining the long-term financial health of a nonprofit organization.
